What We Look for in Successful Agents

What We Look for in Successful Agents
Blog

After recruiting, training, and working alongside more than 100 agents over the last decade, Stephanie Younger Group has learned something important:

The best real estate agents are rarely the “salesiest” people in the room.

In fact, many of the traits that create long-term success in residential real estate have very little to do with traditional sales tactics at all.

The agents who consistently thrive at SYG tend to share a very different set of characteristics rooted in intelligence, empathy, communication, curiosity, and service.

First and foremost, successful agents are highly intelligent and strategically minded. Real estate is not simply about opening doors or posting listings online. It is about helping clients navigate one of the largest financial and emotional decisions of their lives. Great agents must understand negotiation, psychology, market trends, financing, timing, and risk management simultaneously. They need to be deal savvy and capable of solving complex problems calmly under pressure.

Communication is another non-negotiable trait. The strongest agents are exceptional communicators who know how to explain complicated situations clearly and confidently. They are natural teachers. Buyers and sellers constantly need guidance, education, reassurance, and perspective. The best agents do not pressure people into decisions. They help clients understand their options and feel empowered throughout the process.

That is also why optimism matters so much. Real estate transactions are emotional. Deals fall apart. Inspections uncover surprises. Financing changes. Emotions rise quickly. Top-performing agents act almost like therapists during stressful moments. They know how to calm clients down, maintain perspective, and keep everyone focused on solutions instead of panic.

At SYG, we also look for people who genuinely love Los Angeles and enjoy exploring new neighborhoods. Curiosity matters. Great agents are naturally interested in architecture, restaurants, schools, lifestyle trends, local businesses, and the subtle differences between communities. The best agents are constantly researching the market because they truly enjoy it.

Relationship-building is another defining trait. We are not looking for transactional salespeople focused on chasing quick commissions. The strongest agents approach the business with a long-term mindset. They understand that trust compounds over time and that referrals are earned through consistent service and genuine care for clients.

Many of our best agents actually come from hospitality backgrounds, much like Stephanie Younger herself. Hospitality teaches anticipation, communication, responsiveness, emotional intelligence, and client service — all critical skills in high-level real estate representation.

We also value people with a history of achievement in other fields. Success leaves clues. Whether someone excelled in law, hospitality, athletics, entertainment, technology, education, or entrepreneurship, prior achievement often signals discipline, resilience, and the ability to master complex skills.

Most importantly, the best SYG agents are committed to constant improvement. They view real estate as a craft. They study negotiation. They refine communication skills. They learn market data. They seek coaching. They stay curious. They never assume they have everything figured out.

Everything else, we can develop.

We can teach systems.

We can teach contracts.

We can teach CRM workflows.

We can teach marketing and lead generation.

But the core traits — intelligence, empathy, optimism, curiosity, discipline, communication, and a genuine commitment to helping people — are what consistently separate great agents from average ones over the long run.
